In a futuristic neo-Chicago, detective Kontrell investigates a string of murders across the South Side after his childhood best friend, Sisyphus, is killed. They had barely spoken since high school and planned to reunite at a local bar to watch the Bulls game, but Sisyphus never arrived. After the game, Kontrell learns from the station that Sisyphus was murdered, launching a case tied to Ouroboros Corporation, which controls the city through personal phones, police weapons, and corporate-written laws that define justice. Sisyphus had recently joined Ouroboros and knew information he wanted to share with Kontrell. His family had already been destroyed when his father disappeared, his deep-sea technology company was absorbed by Ouroboros, and his mother died by suicide, leaving him impoverished.
