But she soon discovers she wasn’t the first attempt: failed gods are being forced to fight in underground pits controlled by the yakuza. Her search for answers puts her at war with the Neo-Tokyo's underworld—and in an uneasy alliance with one of its bosses, the God of Tricks, the only deity who never died. As Shinigami struggles to understand this future and what she has become, she remains unaware of a greater threat: she may be the first god successfully brought back, but she will not be the last.
