Johnnie, a sixteen-year-old elemental who can command fire, water, earth, and air, hunts the demons and vampires he believes murdered his master and family. Demons wield fire, immense strength, and brutal martial arts. Vampires drain blood, shapeshift, move with terrifying speed, and fight with expert martial arts. After Johnnie accidentally uses fire against a massive bear, he tells his father Keith, a former elemental who abandoned the night war for family and farm life. Keith forbids Johnnie from ever using his power or speaking of it. The next day, Keith sends Johnnie on the familiar two-day trip from Kusano through Kusabana to Reika City, carrying the farm’s vegetables and meat to sell. Master Ken, Keith’s former teacher, sees Johnnie pass through Kusabana and realizes he will be gone. Ken sets the Kusano farmhouse ablaze that night, unaware Keith is the elemental he has been hunting. Keith returns, rescues his family’s bodies, recognizes Ken, and fights him through the night. Ken kills Keith and leaves burns that suggest a demon or vampire attack. Returning from Reika City, Johnnie finds his family, farm, and home destroyed, then begins the hunt Ken intended to create.
