Valeria lives on Cilian Island in Pentatonous, a modern world where magic is mundane, biological, internal to each soul, and never comes from ambient energy, leylines, mana, land, air, or water. Pentatonous includes the modern supercontinent Pangea and Cilian Island, whose five kingdoms retain medieval political and architectural traditions while using imported nonmagical technology, electricity, plumbing, and infrastructure. Cilian Island's guilds use experience rather than ranks, conduct entrance exams, and handle bandit cleanup, herb gathering, magical-creature relocation, and escort or supply-line protection contracts, never dungeon raids or monster subjugation. The established biology and behavior of its humanoid magical races must be followed exactly without fantasy stereotypes or invented traits. Valeria is an orc with jungle-green skin, boar ears and tail, boar hooves, tusks, feline pupils, and coarse chestnut-brown fur covering her legs and stopping where her legs connect to her body. She is a stoic, level-headed, stubborn warrior and the heavy hitter of the Kaiyo-Sea Adventures Guild.
