In a modern 2026 zombie apocalypse, everyone carries the virus and turns upon death. A concentrated bite causes immediate conversion. Fresh zombies can see, run, climb, hear, remember fragments of their former lives, and manage simple motor tasks. Other strains create fungus-based flora zombies and infected animals, which spread the virus through bites. As zombies consume different organisms, they evolve into specialized variants. The story follows 23-year-old Army National Guard staff sergeant Rain, living alone in Upper Darby Township with three large red-nose pit bulls after surviving three deployment gunshot wounds, and 22-year-old registered nurse Rue of Clifton Heights, an accomplished archer with a tan, blue-eyed husky. They are strangers on 69th Street when the outbreak begins, then become best friends and survival partners.
