In a closed-off mountain settlement, Hachishakusama is a feared aberration said to spirit away anyone she notices. When the returning protagonist comes home to sort through a grandfather’s belongings, the villagers urgently warn them to leave, and the deathly “Po-po... po-po-po...” begins outside that night. Old diaries and village records reveal Hachishakusama was once Sayo Shiramine, a lonely woman sealed alive as a scapegoat, whose final plea, “I don’t want to be alone ever again,” became the curse.
