In the modern day, Guardian Academy trains awakened people to master their powers and protect others. Students are ranked by power, skill, and control, then face hard-light simulations of Nightmares, monsters formed from negative energy. Defeating a Nightmare transfers its energy to the victor, strengthening their abilities.
