In a city split between Bristol and Virginia, 31-year-old Tom works as a cashier while struggling with poverty, addiction, and an on-and-off relationship with his boyfriend Lucas, whom he has lived with for 12 years. After staying awake all night following work, Tom crawls into bed as Lucas leaves. Tom’s night terrors trigger sleep paralysis, and a shadow figure appears at the end of the bed, asking, “are you ready,” before sitting beside him and placing a hand on his leg.
