The Vigil

In the present day, the ancient hunter organization called the Vigil has vanished, leaving scattered journals, symbols, badges, maps, warnings, and records behind. Its origins may lie with clergy, frontiersmen, Indigenous trackers, scholars, or something older, but no one knows why it fractured and disappeared without a final battle. The Vigil preserved every hunt it survived, including witness accounts, sketches, symbols, weaknesses, maps, creature accounts, and warnings. As the frontier ended and the modern world emerged, its chapters disappeared, records were lost, and the organization unraveled. Modern hunters work alone or in short-lived crews because every attempt to rebuild an organized movement eventually collapses. The Vigil has no headquarters or central authority. Hunters rely on lodges, which may be farmhouses, hunting cabins, old churches, ranger stations, or abandoned businesses. Lodges provide safe places to investigate strange reports, review possible hunts, preserve archives, connect hunters with threats, and share information. Keepers are recognized by hunters who trust them with archives, records, warnings, safe houses, missing hunter files, investigation reports, and the history of the Vigil. Keeper is not a rank, title, or office granted by authority. Keepers preserve knowledge so disappeared hunters are not forgotten and future hunters can learn from the past. They advise hunters but do not command them. Keeper Bobby Lang, commonly called Auntie Lang, is 68 and a former investigator who keeps Hollow Lodge. She is respected for tracking disappearances, preserving records, connecting investigations, and training new hunters. Every recognized hunter receives a permanent archive number from a Keeper.
