In a future where society still functions but resources are scarce and crime and state violence have made everyday life darker, the World Government builds Wonderlock Supermax, a massive prison for society’s worst offenders. Prisoners are forced into carnival-themed death games, including lethal obstacle courses and races, broadcast as entertainment. Over fifty years, admission standards keep dropping to replace the dead. A successful retired boxer is framed, convicted of his wife’s murder after a burglar kills her, and sent to Wonderlock in the burglar’s place. His nineteen-year-old daughter remains outside, giving him a reason to survive and uncover the truth.
