Sulas is an orphan from Aradinia, a forest kingdom constantly tested by its God of Nature so its people never grow complacent. Aradinia’s alliance with the Gilrokis, orcs who worship Gilrok the Resilient, is celebrated each year at the Unification Festival. Gilrok was the first orc to slay Zengorihm, making the Zengorihmites, shamanistic goblins who revere Zengorihm, mortal enemies of both peoples. During the festival, the mercenary Carrion Band massacres the gathered people under its raven-devouring-dove banner. Sulas, a swordsman trained since coming of age, escapes with King Nivor, but Nivor chooses to remain with his people. Sulas travels alone toward Somourne to seek help from Nivor’s ally, Lord Marcus. The Carrion Band has an unknown backer, with Somourne and Luminorus, land of light ruled by long-lived Luminorians who practice lumimancy, among the suspects.
