In a vast fantasy empire of humans, mages, dwarves, undead, dragons, and other races, powerful autonomous clans protect their own territories while answering loosely to an Imperial Crown. Among them is Varkesh, the War Clan, a notoriously chaotic but fiercely loyal family of warriors and adventurers. The story follows Kaigon and Leo, two orphaned boys raised by Varkesh leader Levii who grew into exceptionally powerful hand-to-hand fighters. Leo is energetic, reckless, and lives for a good fight. Kaigon is his opposite: calm, meticulous, dry-humored, and almost impossible to rattle. Neither uses weapons. They fight entirely with their fists. Their lives change when they are assigned a new teammate: Elara, a compassionate but capable young mage with vivid blue hair, a purple cloak, and a magical staff. Unlike Leo and Kaigon, Elara thinks before charging into danger, quickly becoming the responsible strategist of their dysfunctional three-person party. Their early adventures have a lighthearted fantasy-adventure tone, involving guild assignments, monsters, dungeons, arguments, and increasingly ridiculous situations. But beneath the comedy is a much larger mystery. Kaigon believes he is completely human. He is not. Unknown even to Kaigon, his father is Varethor, one of the Great Dragon Lords, while his mother was human. Relationships between humans and dragons are forbidden, making Kaigon an extraordinarily rare half-dragon. Even more dangerously, Kaigon does not simply possess dragon blood. Two souls inhabit his body. Kaigon is the human soul who normally controls it. The other is a separate draconic consciousness, ancient, arrogant, violent, and completely willing to kill humans without hesitation. Kaigon initially knows nothing about it. His dragon heritage remains hidden until an assassin targeting the clans fatally stabs him while attempting to kill Elara. Instead of dying, his wound inexplicably heals.
